Is it worth it to get a front suspension for a mountain bike used primarily on the road?
I use a mountain bike to commute from my house to downtown, and I thought of getting it a new front suspension. However, aside from the occasional speed bumps and potholes, I usually cycle through well-paved roads. Am I wasting money if I went through with getting front suspension?
Yes, I already know how to handle potholes and speed bumps. It’s just to paint a mental picture.
Is it worth it to get a front suspension for a mountain bike when it’s used primarily for road? No it would be a waste. Suspensions were designed for off road riding not pavement. Most people don’t realize the added effort in riding a bike with suspension. Add your weight plus the weight of the bike and with every pedal stroke you make as a rider you have too compensate for the bouncing effect created by your front suspension and that’s a waste of motion and energy. A Full Suspension is worse.
If I were buying a bike for road use it would be a Road Bike or possibly a Hybrid, they’re easier to ride, less effort, faster and probably lighter. A lot more enjoyable for you as a rider.

It will not be a complete waste. For your kind of riding a bike without a front suspension will do fine but if you have the money and want to do it its cool, but don’t buy a fully fledged suspension that costs a fortune, then it’s a waste of money.

A waste of motion. You should at least lock out the fork when riding on pavement to put your pedaling efforts into more forward thrust. If, as you state it’s all road don’t get a mountain bike. Get a comfort road or hybrid. No suspension.
Steer around the potholes and bunny hop over the speed bumps.

I dont think its a waste of money. it will smooth things out even further and it will give you more control. I’m sure if you get nicer one it will weigh almost as much or less as steel fork.
Which makes me wonder. Is your bike suspension ready. I Mean the geometry of your bike ready for suspension. If not it will slacken things way out.
But yes suspension is great

I would get rid of the shocks all together and get a solid fork. You would find the bike more responsive and a lot more efficient plus you would save some weight. I would change the tires to 1.5 inch high pressure road tires to make it even more efficient.

Where I live, we slowed down by stopping the pedalling, then stand on the pedals as we over-cross the speed bumps.
We detour around potholes, or slowed down by stopping the pedalling, then stand on the pedals as we over cross the potholes
Only those ignorant of Comfort cycling techniques here, would invest in suspension fork

It is a waste of money and energy to use suspension on good roads. The money you would spend on suspension would buy you a better, lighter bike that would be easier and faster to ride on the road.
