What size mountain bike should I get for crosscountry and downhill??? The bike is the specialized enduro?

I’m 6′3 and pretty long arms and legs. Several people told me to get the XL but is this too big? I test rode an xl enduro specialized 07 bike and it feels about right. I think I may tower over the large. I ride up the mountains and then downhill the switchbacks, roots, clifff trails, etc… Is the Large a better bikek for the trails because of the tighter wheel base and lower center of gravity or the the XL a better fit and thus more important?

Also, what body chest armour and full face carbon helmet is good? Something that is not too hot for the carbon full face helmet and chest armor.

I am 5′-11" and am usually comfortable on large mountain bike frames. That said, I’ve ridden a few comfortable mediums. Personally, I like to feel as if I am within the bike moreso than on top of it. (If that makes any sense.)

I wouldn’t worry about the performance of a large vs XL based on frame geometry and proportions. The differences in performance are going to be pretty minimal. The most important thing is that you are comfortable riding the bike. From personal experience, I can tell you there is nothing worse than a poorly fit bike.

The best advice is to ride both a large and an XL and see which feels better given the kind of riding you want to do. By riding, I don’t mean taking a 10 minute spin around the bike shop’s parking lot. Take a good long ride on each and see what works best on the trails you ride.

Hope this helps.

it all comes down to what you feel comfortable on. If you feel to big on a large frame try a different brand or design of frame.

I’m the same size as you. I prefer slightly smaller frames than the way big recommendations.

As long as the top tube length is enough for you to feel comfortable and stretch out, you should be sweet. Often the difference of the largest and next largest frame’s top tube is minimal.

You really need to dial in your contact points. I have a Moots laid back post, a handful of stems, and a set of super wide DH bars that I take with me when I go shopping.

Nothing worse than having a rig that’s too big. Not that they handle so much worse, they just look rude!

One thing I noted in your question is that you tried a XL. You said it’s seems OK and you wonder about the L. What you really need to do is try the L size to know for sure. I don’t know why you haven’t done this. If they don’t have one built or in stock ask when they will have one for you to try out.

Well as everyone else said, try the large and see if you like it. As for good equipment check out 661 for body armor. A good helmet is the specialized deviant. Its not carbon, but its almost as light as a regular skateboard type helmet. It also has just as many vents as a XC helmet.

The best thing to do is to go to a bike shop and get sized. There are a lot of factors to be considered, being you are looking at one bike to do XC and DH you don’t want a bike you either are or feel stretched out on. Next see if the bike shop has demo rides, if not possibly find someone with this bike and take it for a test ride. Riding a Mtn bike around a parking lot is not the best way to find out how a bike feels.
My son (6′2") races a L, when trying out a XL he never felt like he was part of the bike like he did on the L. (On several tracks that are extremely tight he actually races a M.)
For gear 661, Fox, & Troy Lee all make great products.
