need advice on buying a mountain bike?
im buying a mountain bike soon but have no idea where to start really.
I need a woman’s mountain bike but do not know what size of bike is best. (I am 5ft 6 tall).
It needs to be able to cycle on flat road but also on forest ground.
What other advice can you give me and what accessories do I need to buy to get started

With the exception of ‘Alex’ ignore all these answers, they’re really quite terrible.
First and foremost, find a bike shop… Never go to Walmart or Halfords, they sell toys not bikes.
As Alex mentioned, you can ride a men’s bike.. in fact, it’s only been in recent years that they’ve really even started making women specific mountain bikes.
That said, Kona & Norco have both taken a serious interest in lady riders and are working to make some really nice bikes for the gals…. So is Transition with their new Syren.
Now, as for what bike suits you best… the first thing you need to figure is your budget. The best bike for you at $1000 and the best bike for you at $5000 are two very different beasts, though in the end you do get what you’ve paid for so you should try to ’stretch’ your budget as much as possible.
Typically, for people just starting out in mountain biking I recommend that they look into the basic chromoly hardtail offerings from companies like specialized (as Alex mentioned), Norco, Kona, Trek, Rocky Mountain, Orange, etc… Any one of them will be a solid frame with a decent kit on it that’ll serve you well for years as you get into the sport.
