Wheres the best place to buy a cheap bike(used or new) in Victoria?

Looking for a general use mountain bike

you can try Sports Traders downtown , or call around, there are alot of bike shops in Vic. Stay away from pawn shops though, the bikes are probably in crap shape.

Question to pro cyclists about bicycling apparell…?

Hey I have a question… Would riding on the road, on a mountain bike, wearing mountain biking shoes, jersey and shorts look rediculous? Haha, its just that, I ride a mountain bike, and I think if I were to wear road cycling clothes, it wouldn’t really look very uniform… And I think riding in mountain biking gear on the road would look rediculous, but I want to know what you guys think. I don’t ride a road bike because any little bump or rock you ride on feels like you just hit a huge speed bump….
Haha… I’d love to get a full carbon road bike… But maybe after I finish college and have a good job…. Those road bikes are way too expensive. =\

OK, I’m not a pro, but I’ve been an amateur (mtb, road, cyclocross) for 20 years.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing ‘road’ clothes on an MTB. Since you framed your question with regards to pro cyclists, you should note that the only pros that do _not_ wear lycra are the downhillers. All cross country racers dress in lycra:

But really, you should dress in whatever you’re comfortable in. I personally can’t stand the baggy MTB look, but I know plenty of guys that feel the opposite.

on SPECIALIZED, road and mountain bike pedals.?

For mountain, I’m riding a 2006 Specialized Rockhopper Pro. I’ve been riding the stock platform pedals since i bought it in 07, and really like being able to put my feet down and ride lose. Any suggestions for a SPD combination pedal? (so i can pedal more efficiently and have the platform option as well)

Also, i just got an 09 Specialized Langster, which came with a decent pair of toe-clip pedals (baskets). I’m looking at Shimano a530’s to replace these. Any thoughts on these?

Bicycling.com has always recommended the Forte Campus pedals, which are made by Performance Bike. I have the Shimano PD-M324 and like them a lot. I actually just switched over to the Shimano A-520 (similar to the 530’s you asked about), and have to say that I like the PD’s better. I find the second ones much harder to clip into, and one of them is really hard to release even on the loosest setting. I also like the ability to not be clipped in on one foot if you know you are going to have to stop a lot, or may have to stop suddenly and need to get a foot down fast, so I think the two-sided pedals are better when riding in conditions that necessitate not being clipped in all the time.

I’m thinking of buying a mountain bike (used). What’s a good brand for non-pro use?

ie. just charging about the city and mucking about on the beach

Any good well known brand makes inexpensive mountain bikes and you can usually get a good one on ebay. Try the following:

Schwinn
Giant
Trek
Gary Fisher
Kona
Diamondback
Specialized
Mongoose

These are all good brands, the key to a good mountain bike and your satisfaction is in the deraulier gearing, make sure you get good gears (shimano) and good brakes. Even if you are not going to race you want a bike to last and one of the above brands will make you happy, just make sure it fits and you are comfortable.

Beginner Triathlete Advice?

I would like to compete in my first triathlon this summer. I am very clueless on how it all works. First of all, I own a cheap mountain bike, will this do for the bike section or am I going to get laughed at on my huffy? Second, do you have to wear a wet suit and if not and don’t own one do you just wear a bathing suit? When in transition after the swim do you put other clothes on? How do you find your bike? I just don’t know all the little things and if someone could help me out or point me in the right direction for a beginner I would appreciate it so very much. I don’t want to go pro I just love challenging myself. I’ve done a marathon and now I want to try something new. All the websites I’ve gone to don’t offer answers on the little things and I’ve never seen one so like I said, I’m very clueless.

Oh my. You need to come up to speed very quickly.

To the bike part. You don’t necessarily need a tri/trials bike, but you will see plenty of them. What you do need is a competent road bike. I doubt you could finish the bicycle leg on a mountain bike.

can any1 recomend a pair or wheels for under 100 pounds for a stumpjumper mountain bike?

im riding a specialised stumpjumper mountain bike and need to replace the wheels after discovering a 5inch split on the rear wheel rim. What would be the best pair of wheels to purchase for under 100 pounds?

You won’t get brilliant ones for that price. If you look at the attached link there are some M:Wheel XM317 wheels that are reduced at the moment and are just under £100 for the pair.

I have used Mavic wheels on the road, and had no problems with them.

Wiggle are a reputable company that I’ve used for many years and always had excellent service from them.
